| My wife and I arrived in Paris on the morning of this show after a night flight from the US. We'd been awake for approximately 30 hours at show time, so we weren't happy to find the opening hip hop act in mid-performance.
It took an incredibly long time for the MMW crew to set-up because they were having communication problems with the French "helpers." I saw the entire drum kit dragged out of position by a Factory staff person pulling the rug it was sitting on. Then the mikes wouldn't work. Lots of lolly gagging around. And, it was soooooo smokey. The French smoke cigarettes big time and they don't believe in ventilation. So, by the time the guys headed onstage it was after midnight, smokey, raucous, everyone was making funny talk.
Still, we were frontrow, stageleft, staring over the soundboard at piano keys, with a rail to lean on. Like the atmosphere of the Factory Club, my memory of the show is hazy, due to lack of sleep and the late hour, but I recall lots of jamming, starting with a decent drum solo to leading into more improv, eventually moving into a theme. On scraps of notes, I jotted down Wiggley's Way, Chubb Subb, and ITAHTLMJ. Short versions of these tunes, leading back into jamming. A couple more tunes of univisible: I wanna ride you... maybe dracula. Ending with a nice frontstage mini-instrument jam.
The crowd--which broke out the whistling during the long break between acts--seemed pretty low key, new to the sound. They get all excited every time a bit of funk would roll out of the jamming, moving towards a constant, but it never lasted. My buddy Marc's wife said she never remembered anything dancible lasting over a few minutes.
Still, we were in Paris, watching MMW. It was a long way from the 9:30 club. I'd really been hoping someone would post a setlist. I didn't see any mike stands in the crowd. This show, like my memory of it, went up in smoke. I'd like to hear it someday... maybe won't happen. too bad. it was a strange one. |
